VCE Mathematical Methods (MM)
VCE Mathematical Methods (MM) focuses on logical reasoning and the various methodology of solving mathematical problems. The subject itself has a mild difficulty resulting in an average scaling up of 5. It is also a prerequisite for many popular university courses including bachelor of science, bachelor of biomedicine and bachelor of commerce.
VCE MM Study Design:
Functions and Graphs:
● Power functions, y = xⁿ , n ∈ Q
● Exponential functions, y = ax , a ∈ R+ , y = ex
● Logarithmic functions, y = loge (x) and y = log10(x)
● Circular functions, y = sin(x), y = cos(x) and y = tan(x)
● Graphs of polynomial functions
● Transformation of graphs from y = f (x) to y = Af (n(x + b)) + c
● Relationship between original and image graphs
● Addition of ordinates and piecewise functions
Algebra:
● Algebra of polynomials, equating coefficients and solution of polynomial equations up to 'n' number of solutions
● Identifying characteristics and properties of functions including symmetry periodicity and algebraic equivalence using f(x+k)=f(x),f(xⁿ)=nf(x),f(x)+f(-x)=0,f(xy)=f(x)f(y)
● Properties and conditions of inverse functions
● Properties and conditions of composite functions where f composition of g is defined by f(g(x))
● Solution of 2 functions within a certain interval
● Solution of literal equations and general solutions of equations
● Potential solutions to simultaneous equations and geometric interpretations of 2 equations
Calculus:
● Derivatives of basic functions
● Derivatives of f (x) ± g(x), f (x) × g(x), f(x)/g(x) and f (g (x))
● Calculation of average and instantaneous rate of change
● Determining equation of tangents, normals and angle of tangents
● Determining stationary points of graphs
● Antiderivatives of basic functions
● Sketching derivative and antiderivative functions
● Fundamental theorem of calculus
● Determining area under the curve
● Calculation of average value of functions
Probability and Statistics:
● Discrete random variables
● Continuous random variables and the normal distribution
● Statistical inference including sample proportions and confidence intervals
Specifications:
MM CAS:
A graphical calculator that allows for automatic solving of functions and graphing of various functions. Students are permitted 1 approved CAS calculator (Casio, Hewlett Packard or Texas instruments) for exams that allow them. Pre-made scripts or programs are also permitted for use.
MM SACs:
Unit 3 SACs contributes 17% to a student’s final study score and is composed of 3 outcomes. Unit 4 SACs also contributes 17% (34% in total for school-based assessments) and is composed of 3 outcomes. There will be at least 1 major problem-solving assessment and at least 1 problem solving or modelling task based on probability and statistics.
Final Exams:
The final exams contribute 66% of a student’s final study score and is composed of exam 1 (22%) and exam 2 (44%).
Exam 1 is composed of around 10 short answer questions with no access to notes or calculators.
Exam 2 is composed of 20 multiple choices and around 4 extended response style questions. Students are permitted 1 bound reference and both a CAS and scientific calculator for exam 2.
MM Past Exam:
WILL provides free VCE MM past exam papers, all you need to do is contact us (via WeChat or Email) to claim it for free.
